De typische verleidingsscène in de Griekse epiek

Abstract

This article aims to provide a more exact overview of the structure of the traditional type scene of seduction in ancient Greek epic poems, based on the insights of the previous research of Forsyth and Sowa. All instances of such seduction scenes have at least some of the following elements: divine inducement, preparation, departure and approach, and reaction of the male audience. In some cases, the characters go a step further: when the reluctance of one of the participants has been overcome, the man and the woman have sex, after which they realize the painful consequences. The poets sometimes deviate from this scheme, usually due to the requirements of the context. However, in some cases this deviation indicates an original intervention of the poet. Two examples of this will be discussed.
