Risicocommunicatie en rookgedrag: een experimentele variatie op de waarschuwingen op sigarettenverpakkingen
Abstract
Recent research suggests that exposing individuals to threatening health messages without reassuring action recommendations induces defensive responses such as trivializing or denying a health threat. These findings point to the suggestion that the effectiveness of the recent health warnings on tobacco packaging can be enhanced considerably by including an effective action recommendation. This hypothesis was tested in a 2 (smoker status) x 2 (recommendation effectiveness) between subjects design among 60 male participants. Main dependent measures included attitude towards smoking, behavioural intentions to quit smoking, and defensive responses. The results supported our predictions: particularly for smokers, the inclusion of a simple action recommendation resulted in reduced defensive responses, enhanced perceived relevance, more negative attitudes toward smoking, and increased intentions to quit smoking.
