Abstract

In this article the influence of the reading socialisation on the level of books read later in life is investigated for the birth cohorts who finished secondary education between 1975 and 1998. Three forms of reading socialisation are distinguished: the literary socialisation by the parents, the literary socialisation during the secondary education and the socialisation in popular culture. Information on the reading socialisation is gathered by questioning the socialisation-actors, parents and literature teachers, themselves. The level of read books is measured via direct indicators of the prestige of authors from the literary field. The outcomes of multi-level analyses show the positive effects of high reading parents and number of hours spent on literary education in school. Frequent watching of television at a young age has a negative influence on the reading level. However, trends in the reading level between cohorts could not be explained by trends in reading socialization.
