Abstract

In order to develop a professional approach towards press, companies should be aware of differences in media coverage between newspapers. Newspapers say they differ from each other. Looking at the differences in their audience, we have reason to belief that this is true. Our research question was ‘to what extend do Dutch newspapers differ in the way they report about Dutch enterprises?’ During july 1996 and January 1997, we followed all media coverage of 25 big companies that are part of the Amsterdam Exchanges Index (AEX) in five national newspapers, and clustered them by branch. Over 2000 articles were collected and clustered by type of news (economic and non economic). Each article got an ‘importance indicator’ (position in newspaper multiplied by the number of paragraphs) and ‘judgementscore’ (the way journalists judged about a company). More than 70% of all articles dealt with economic topics. We found that branch is correlated to both importance indicator and judgementscore. Type of news is correlated to judgementscore. However, we hardly found any differences between newspapers! The results are disappointing for editors and people who are strongly in favour of media diversity. For companies however, the results are good news, as newspapers are rather positive about companies and there seems no need for differentiation in approach towards newspapers.
