Abstract

There are major differences between young and old people where it concerns the possession and use of personal computers. In this article the causes of these differences are studied on the basis of both qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative research is based on so-called focus group interviews. The quantitative research involves the analysis of a national survey held in 1998. Both types of research point to the influence of digital capital. These computer skills prove to be primarily related to (former) experience in the work place. The qualitative research further points to the influence of social resources (the help and advice of family, friends and acquaintances). The quantitative research indicates that, to some extent, material resources (income) also matter.
