Abstract

In this study an overview is presented of the most important theoretical and methodological deficiencies of the cultivation theory and its research. For specific cultivation measures (perception of crime, feelings of unsafety, anomia and perception of ethnic threat) a multivariate replication is conducted. The findings are mixed. The authors found that watching television in general had no cultivation effect. However, watching fiction and entertainment programmes appeared to have cultivation effects on estimates of physical abuse, anomia, and feelings of ethnic threat. This type of cultivation effect did not hold for estimates of burglaries and feelings of unsafety. No empirical evidence for mainstreaming and resonance-effects is found.
