Abstract
The present study investigated whether young people from lower social classes would attribute more sex stereotypical traits to themselves and have more traditional views of the marital relationship than young people from higher social classes. The results from the initial questionnaire show that young men and women respectively attributed more stereotypical masculine or feminine traits to themselves. They also show that women hold less traditional views on marriage than men. Our subjects were then asked to watch a (shortened) instalment of a popular quiz program in which men and women behave in sex stereotypical ways. We expected that this instalment would enhance sex stereotypical and traditional conceptions and have a differential influence on persons of lower or higher social class. However, only women were influenced: they attributed less feminine traits to themselves after watching the quiz than before. The results are discussed in relation to salience and sex roles.
