Cultuurpessimisme en de paradox van een kritische mediapedagogie
Abstract
he theoretical assumptions of the Frankfurter Schule, more specifically those of Adorno and Horkheimer, are the subject of this article. In their view of Cultural Industry, Adorno and Horkheimer emphasize the manipulative functions of the media. This thesis is rejected by Enzensberger in his theory of the Consciousness Industry. The questions raised in this article are: (a) ’did these two approaches contribute to media education?’, and (b) ’did these approaches stimulate the development of media-education programmes?’. A review of the literature leads to the following conclusions. The ideas of the Frankfurter Schule had an agenda-setting function. Their critical approach marks a caesura with traditional media theory. In addition, critical analysis of the media was stimulated. These analyses have been used by individual teachers in their lessons. Enzensberger’s approach gave rise to projects in which pupils learned to use video and other media. However, complete educational programmes have not been developed on any of these theories.
