Abstract
In the last ten years, a series of so-called television literacy curricula have been developed in the United States, teaching programs aimed at turning children into critical consumers of television. The Dutch TV curriculum ’’Watching TV differently” fits in with these initiatives. Effects studies show that television curricula can enhance children’s knowledge of TV and alter their perceptions of TV contents. TV curricula were shown to be less powerful in bringing about attitudinal and behavioral changes in children. Before preparing a television curriculum, the children’s entry behavior should be studied. Additionally, the lessons should be tested in advance, to check whether the information supplied is getting across.
