Abstract
In 1984 the campaign ’drunk driving, too soon a crime’ was launched. This campaign, conducted mainly nationwide, was locally supported in some communities by local sections of Veilig Verkeer Nederland (Dutch Road Safety Organization). The research purpose was to determine whether local support is more effective in bringing a desired change in knowledge, opinions and behavior with regard to drunk driving than a pure nationwide mass-mediated campaign. In this article the results of the evaluation research are reported. The conclusion is that local support is more effective with regard to the publicity of the campaign and the knowledge about drunk driving but that, contrary to expectations, is not more effective in changing opinions and behaviour with regard to drunk driving.
