Abstract

The Greek novels present the phenomenon bride theft - an alternative marriage strategy throughout antiquity -in a realistic way (as far as motives, strategy, the participation of the girl, and punishment are concerned). The topos of bride theft is used by the novelists to reconcile the romantic love of the young couple with the demands of society. The traditional ideo-logy about marriages is briefly ruptured by a bride theft, but never entirely overturned.
