De gedichten van loannes Geometres. Een uniek beeld van Konstantinopel in de tiende eeuw
- Wim Broekaert
Abstract
The oeuvre of John Geometres, a Byzantine aristocrat, leading officer in the imperial army and celebrated poet, includes a large collection of epigrams and other poems. They deal with a variety of subjects, thus offering a sketch of the political and social events in the tenth century Byzantine empire and the religious beliefs of a Christian intellectual. The author manifests his high education in both the classical and the biblical literary traditions, a distinctive feature of the Macedonian Renaissance.
