De Grieks-Romeinse wereld en Indië
- Erik Seldeslachts
Abstract
Throughout Antiquity contacts and exchanges have taken place between the Graeco-Roman and the Indian worlds: war, politics and trade. Several periods are highlighted, viz. that of the Achaemenids, Alexander the Great and his successors, the Indo-Greeks. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms, routes, products and people involved in the overland and maritime trade. Cul¬ tural and linguistic exchanges are retraced and an evaluation is made of the mutual knowledge and understanding between Greeks and Indians. Although protracted contacts over centuries led to a large number of affinities and similarities between Ancient India and the Ancient West, the¬ re never was a far-reaching or generalised cultural osmosis between the two.
