Het Hodoiporikón ("reisverslag") van Konstantinos Manasses
- Willem Aerts
Abstract
The Byzantine Empress Irene (= Bertha of Sulzbach), first wife of Manuel I died 1160. A Byzantine delegation was sent to Palestine in order to find for him a second wife from one of the Crusaders States in Palestine. Constantine Manasses was one of the members of that dele¬ gation and in his poem Hodoiporikón (± 900 verses in 4 poems, ed. by K. Homa in BZ 1904) he describes his dreams, his voyage, his visits of the holy places in Palestine, his illnesses and his revalidation on Cyprus. This work of Manasses is his only poem written in 12-syllable verses, probably to be understood as a messenger’s story in a classical tragedy. The text is presented here with a Dutch translation, following the metre as close as possible.
