Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between art- especially the neoclassical movementand politics in nazi Germany. During the reign of Adolf Hitler tremendous efforts were made to represent the nazi state by means of massive propaganda. Inspired by the subtility of Greek art and above all by the grandeur of Roman imperial times, Hitler wanted to create an image of his Third Reich, reflecting its strength and ideal character. He wanted a national, völkisch art, but instead came up with an eclectic mixture, using classical forms but forgetting the classical spirit.
