De Griekse stad op school
- Anton Van Hooff
Abstract
In traditional history teaching classical antiquity only figured as'The Romans in our country' showing how civilisation was brought to the territory of the modem nation state on which ‘our’ forefathers, noble barbarians, lived. For modem schools the Greek city, both the modest polis and the metropolis of Alexandria, is a much better topic as it invites youngsters who mostly live in an urban environment to confront their own experiences with the conditions of a distant past.
