Abstract

This article provides insights in the Byzantine satirical poem Πρὸς τὸν Χοιροσφάκτην Λεόντα by Constantine Rhodios. As the poem consists of long, sometimes unclear, compound nouns this article focuses on the neologisms and the root words of which they consist. The first part introduces the writer Rhodios and his adversary Leo Choirosphaktes, and explains the term satire and its meaning in Byzantium. The second part consists of a translation and an analysis of the poem, followed by a quick summary of what the poem tells us about the Zeitgeist as well as an impetus to link it to other works from the same period.
