Abstract
This survey contribution examines the extent to which the Greeks reflected on their own language and on other languages. What sorts of linguistic research did they engage in, and to what degree are we still informed of the results of their explorations? The article discusses, among other things, their ideas about etymology, the importance of the alphabet as well as their grammatical and lexicographical activity
