Griekenland: Een geschiedenis van migratie
- Ioannis Georgakopoulos
Abstract
This article aims to give a concise overview of the different periods of emigration since the foundation of Modern Greece. Were the motives for this emigration waves purely economic or can we also determine geopolitical causes? What were the major destinations and did they change over time? What were the similarities and differences between the various emigration episodes? By the end of the 20th century, we witness a remarkable shift: from primarily a source of emigrants Greece is turning into a promised land for economic refugees mainly from former Eastern Bloc countries. Finally, I try to describe the effects of migration on present day Greece, bearing in mind the massive amount of incoming economic and political refugees as well as the equally huge number of departing Greeks in search for a better future.
