Abstract

In this article on social mobility in classical Athens, the author examines the traditional static model of the social structure in democratic Athens, in order to formulate a new, more dynamic interpretative model of the socio-economic situation in classical Athens. Since social mobility can be defined as the movement between different positions in a society’s social stratification system, which should be conceived of along many dimensions, it is to be understood as a multifaceted concept, which ought to be studied as such. For this reason, this article examines the traditional static model of the social structure in democratic Athens along various lines of research, namely the problem of economic mobility, the role of timè, the value of social capital and the importance of demonstrating legal status in Athenian society.
