Digenis Akritis: Een tekst, een held
- Mieke Penninck
Abstract
This article offers an introduction to Digenis Akritis, one of the first literary texts written in the Greek vernacular. First the two most important versions, E and G, and their differences are discussed. The historical background of the text is a second topic that is treated. Most attention is paid, however, to the kind of text Digenis Akritis is. The author argues that Digenis Akritis is a text sui generis using elements from the Greek novel, hagiography and epic. In doing so, the narrative has its own specific purpose: the depiction of an imperfect, human hero.
