Over helden, schurken en mooie vrouwen: James Bond in de oudheid?
Abstract
From antiquity has come down to us a literary genre commonly referred to as the ancient Greek novel. Romantic love and adultery, villains and pirates, shipwrecks and separation, reunion and a happy ending are only some of the stock motives informing their plots. These narratives are usually labelled ‘ideal’ and one of their primary functions is likely to have been entertainment. This article focuses on the literary and rhetorical toolkits adopted by the novelists to confront traditional, stereotypical material. The conclusions suggests that some of these novels are not as ideal as common opinion would have it.
