Abstract

In this article, the two earliest Dutch translations of Longinus' famous treatise Peri Hupsous (Le Clercq 1719 and Siegenbeek 1811) are compared to the original Greek text and to each other. On the one hand we want to discover the poetics which Le Cercq and Siegenbeek applied in translating Longinus. A second part then explores the way the translators interpreted the complex subject matter of the Sublime.
