E.T.A. Hoffmanns ‘Griekse’ vertellingen 'Die Irrungen' en 'Die Geheimnisse': Een kritische reactie op de filhelleense mode in het Vroegnegentiende-eeuwse Duitsland
- Myriam Pelgrims
Abstract
The first part of this article presents the author, composer, painter and lawyer Hoffmann. In a second part, the historical background is sketched: the renewed European (idealizing) interest in Classical Greece and the contemporary political and military events both in Western Europe and in the Balkans. The third and longest part discusses the two stories, dating from 1820 and 1821. After a summary of the plot, the article offers an interpretation of the texts, focusing on their 'Greek' elements. Philhellenism in contemporary Berlin appears to be satirized, both in the realistic setting and in the fictitious and fantastic story.
