De Hittieten en de Aegeïsche wereld
- Léon De Meyer
Abstract
Despite the initial strong resistance to Emile Forrer’s hypothesis that Ahhiyawa, in the Hittite texts, was to be identified as the "land of the Achaeans", and that well-known historical Greek characters as Andreus, Eteocles and Atreus were mentioned there, support for this theory has grown over the years. This article states, in the form of a state-of-the-art report, the arguments in favour of this hypothesis, before dwelling on the identifications between Hittite, Greek and Turkish geographical names in Asia Minor, and on the historical relations between the Hittite Empire and the Achaean world, according to Hittite sources. In this way, a fascinating picture is drawn of Asia Minor’s west coast in pre-homeric days.
