Abstract
Higher education has been subject to a number of changes: decreasing resources, increasing number of students, increasing regulation and formalisation... And although there is a growing perception that the nature of academic work is shifting, there is still little known about the outcomes that these changes generate for academic staff. In this article, we are interested in learning more about the workload and job satisfaction of academics. Using the demand-control-support model, we investigate the role of job control and social support in buffering the negative job demands facing academics today. We want to contribute to the ongoing debate on work pressure at the university and provide a greater understanding of the current challenges that universities face. For the analysis, we rely on survey data (n=345) collected among the academic professors at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
