Abstract

An increasing number of children is living in a one-parent-family. From the literature it is obvious that educational characteristics in one-parent-families differ from those in traditional families. The research question considered here is whether children perceive these differences as such. If so, these different perceptions potentially give way to differences in well-being. Using data from the CBGS-KRC Children’s Survey (2001, n=1955) the association between the type of family the child lives in and the child’s perception of its educational context is being examined by means of non-parametric tests. The empirical evidence suggests that significant differences exist between the perception of children living with a single parent or in an alternating family context in comparison to children living in traditional families on all the educational traits considered, i.e. the monitoring of the child’s activities by its mother and father, the child’s communication with mother and father, the communication between the parents mutually, the feeling of acceptance by the parents, and the behavioural autonomy the child experiences.
