Abstract
The French cultural sociologist Bourdieu has developed his personal view on the role of social mechanisms within the artistic field. With his theoretical insights in mind, the author of this article has explored the Flemish theatre circuit. The author provides us with an analysis of this field, with the particular focus upon the role (function) of the theatre critic. The writing on theatre seems to be connected with the position and the status of the reviewer and the commented company. Since 1975, the Flemish theatre reviewer has been developing a specific struggle for a legitimate view on theatre. Due to his own contribution, this struggle has resulted in the issue of a new 'stage decree'. This new line of policy instigated a parallelism between the artistic and political field in Flanders.
