________

“The doctrine of Action”. Flemish activism and German Aktivismus between nationalism and cosmopolitanism
Recent literary-historical research has demonstrated that the activism of a generation of young writers and intellectuals not only referred to their collaborative activities, but also to the literary strategy they applied. Thus these young Flemish (inter)nationalists ascribed such a large political and even ‘subversive’ clout to the word, that they believed that literature could change the world even outside the limitations of the text. The contact with the German Aktivismus, as created by Kurt Hiller was of essential importance in this respect. The article reviews the notable parallels between this expressionist movement and Flemish activism in more detail. It focuses on the writings of Victor Jozef Brunclair, the pre-eminent chronicler of his left-activist generation and the best known Flemish author who perished in a concentration camp.
}, month = {7}, pages = {176-192}, publisher={ADVN | archief voor nationale bewegingen}, journal = {WT.
