Peripetieën rond Uitgeverij Steenlandt. II.

The trials and tribulations of Publishing House Steenlandt.
II. René Verbeeck and his literary interweaving caught between a rock and a hard place
This two-part article describes how the Kort-rijk-based Uitgeverij Steenlandt [Steenlandt Publishing House] evolved from a predominantly literary and artistic publishing house into a player in the (cultural) collaboration during the Second World War. Following its relocation to Schaarbeek in 1941, the focus shifted significantly toward propaganda publications commissioned by, among others, the German-Flemish Labor Community (DeVlag) and the German occupying forces. Steenlandt simultaneously continued to position itself as a literary publishing house, although its catalogue came to be predominantly marked by collaborating authors and those sympathetic to the New Order, such as Blanka Gyselen,  Bert Peleman and Lode Quasters. This literary aspect of Steenlandt’s collaboration is the focus of this second part, in which the perspective shifts from the publishing house to the poet and amateur publisher René Verbeeck, who, as an editor at Steenlandt, served as the primary interlocutor for literary publications and proposals during the years 1943-1945. Although Verbeeck himself did not take an explicit political-ideological stance, he played a pivotal role in the publishing house’s collaboration as the linchpin of her literary network. This article reconstructs how Verbeeck came to work at Steenlandt, situates the poet-editor within the literary field, and analyses his publishing policy and contacts during the war years.
