An overview of feline atopic skin syndrome

Abstract

Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome (FASS) is a pruritic inflammatory disease affecting cats. It presents a wide variety of lesion patterns and may become a chronic problem. Most affected cats exhibit one or more cutaneous lesion patterns, including miliary dermatitis, self-induced alopecia, pruritus in the head and neck region, and eosinophilic granuloma complex. Current treatments focus on anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory agents such as glucocorticoids and cyclosporine, combined with controlling triggering factors like ectoparasites and food allergies. While atopic syndrome is well understood in dogs and humans, FASS remains less understood, with significant knowledge gaps. Given the considerable impact of FASS on cats’ quality of life and the challenges veterinarians and owners face in managing it, in this review, it is aimed to highlight the main aspects of the syndrome to improve awareness and support better clinical outcomes for affected cats.
