Practical approach to hemoabdomen in dogs and cats - Part 1: causes and diagnosis

Abstract

In the small animal emergency service, hemoabdomen is a condition commonly encountered in dogs and less frequently in cats. The underlying causes can be broadly classified as traumatic or non-traumatic. Traumatic hemoabdomen may result from blunt, penetrating or iatrogenic trauma. Non-traumatic hemoabdomen results most commonly from malignant neoplasia, but also from coagulopathies, hematomas or benign mass lesions, gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), intra-abdominal organ torsion or necrosis. Diagnosis is confirmed via abdominocentesis and fluid analysis, but further imaging and laboratory evaluation are required to determine the source and consequences of hemorrhage.
