Feit en waarde: missing links: bedenkingen bij en naar aanleiding van A. Blok's "Antropologische perspectieven"
Abstract
Fact and value: missing links. Some considerations about A. Blok’s ’’Antropologische perspectieven" - Blok’s „Antropologische perspectieven” seeks to give an historical account of the development of anthropology in terms of some of its leading themes: participatory observation, the holistic perspective, the comparative point of view, the primitive- civilized dichotomy, and the developmental perspective. The shortcomings of this book reside in the schematic fashion in which the above-mentioned themes are handled. This results in several questionable distinctions including a separation between fact and value. Blok’s analytical and static distinctions are all the more surprising in a book whose alleged main theme is developmental and processual. Not surprisingly therefore the marxist tradition finds no place among Blok’s perspectives. Marxist anthropology above all seeks to work dynamically and processually and to transcend the false and alienating dichotomy between fact and value. In sum, Blok’s suggestion that we re-write the history of anthropology in terms of its leading themes is a potentially fruitful one. But the book itself fails to live up to its promise.
