Maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en levensvoldoening bij bejaarden

Abstract

Social participation and life satisfaction of aged people - The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between social participation of the aged and the life satisfaction as measured by the revised Life Satisfaction Index of Adams. Three indicators of social participation are used: informal relations with husband, family and friends; formal participation in associations and hobby practice. By testing the effect of these three variables several other factors are controlled: age, marital status, invalidity, health evaluation, marital satisfaction, income evaluation and the number of living children of the aged. The data employed for the analysis are drawn from a survey of the Population and Family Study Center (1977). Multiple linear regression analysis indicates that hobby practice is more important as a predictor of life satisfaction than participation in associations and informal relations. In comparison to most of the control factors these effects are rather small.
