Contextuele variabelen in het sociologisch onderzoek
Abstract
Contextual variables in sociological research - In this article the main theoretical and technical problems of the use of contextual variables in sociological research are examined. After a critical overview of the definitions of a contextual variable in the literature, another definition and classification of this kind of variable is presented. The second and third part of the paper deal with the operationalisation of contextual variables and the three main questions which arise in empirical research i.e. the causal ordering of contextual and individual variables, the significance of the contextual effects and the interpretation of their working components. The article concludes by assessing the role of contextual variables in sociological research.
