Abstract

Content analysis of the information transmitted by the Belgian daily press about the police action against drugs on the i)th of October 1969 — On the 15th of October 1969 the Belgian Minister of Justice organised a nation¬ wide action against drugs. The subject of the article consists of a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the information about this round up, published in the Belgian daily newspapers. The first edition of the 16th, 17th and 18th of October was included in the analysis. After an introductory note on the problem of drugs, the author explains the classification of the Belgian newspapers — based on language, political opinion and economic interrelationships. A detailed quantitative study is made of each element of the newspaper item concerning the action. The superficies of the text and the importance of the headlines and the illustrations are measured. The qualitative analysis tries to find out if the newspaper information is complete, trustworthy and independent. Some conclusions of the study. On the 16th of October, the first information day, only a few newspapers mention the drugraid among the „last minute informations”. On the 17th of October, all the newspapers impart the drug action to their reading public. This happens mainly on the frontpage : the material and psychological result of the round up, the reasons and the aim of it, comparisons with similar actions in other countries, etc. The illustrations are not very interesting and almost the same in all the papers. The headings differ remarkably in extent; they underline the importance of the action and ask for the results. On the 18th of October, the third information day about the police action, only a few, modest articles with a retrospective survey of the raid and some comments appear. The qualitative analysis demonstrates that the newspapers have a local view on news, and that quite a lot of the articles are really incomplete or even contradictory.
