Literatuur en maatschappij: theoretische beschouwingen en poging tot structurele analyse van vijf romans van Hugo Claus
Abstract
Literature and society. An essay to sociological analysis of the novels of Hugo Claus - The object of this article is to introduce a sociological analysis of literature. In a first part, the author considers the problems of the sociology of literature and gives a brief summary of the most' relevant trends and methods of this still very recent science. Moreover she takes into consideration the possibilities of the genetic structuralism (among others developed by Lucien Goldmann) for the sociology of literature. In addition, some of the most important sociological results of a concrete analysis of the “mental structure” of five novels by the Flemish author, Hugo Claus, are discussed. This examination shows that it is possible to make a sociological analysis of literature, without considering esthetical or mere literary standards. New in this analysis is the combination of structuralism with content analysis of the classical type, with which one gets more reliable results. The author thinks that such procedure, if more elaborated, can mean a useful starting-point for the sociological study of literature.
