Overlapping: een vals probleem
Abstract
Overlapping. A false problem - Overlapping is one of the barriers to overcome in getting a perfectly working information system. But it is also one of those obstacles which are too vaguely perceived to be handled properly. Considered both from the point of view of producer and consumer of scientific information, overlapping can be defined as follows. Within a given period a re-affirmation of approved ideas and/or findings to an already informed public that alternatively comprises specialists directly engaged in the subject matter, specialists only indirectly involved and interested lay-men. Since all knowledge increases and progresses alongside logistic curves, the clause “within a given period” indicates that overlapping should have different meanings within the successive stages of scientific growth. Contrary to a well-spread belief, the author argues therefore that it becomes doubtful overlapping in its broad sense, could be a such harmful by-product of scientific research. At the other hand several kinds of would-be overlapping occur frequently.
