The newsreel : a marginal newsmedium - Ever since the invention of the camera, the newsreel has become one of our sources of information. The author compares the newsreel with the other newsmedia (newspaper, radio, television) and points out the typical characteristics of this medium: opportunities and limits in content and visual expression, the slow distribution, the lack of direct contact between newsagents and the audience, the influence of economic factors, the heterogeneity of the audience, etc. A more detailed study is made of the relationship between the television news and the newsreel, and the consequences of the competition of television. The author discusses the different structures of the agencies producing newsreels, which shows that they are becoming more and more dependant on state loans and grants, and that as a consequence the newsreel is losing its independence.
