Abstract

Inquiry into the methods of incorporation of interest in national product and national income accounts - a historical and theoretical study – This study deals with some problems concerning the methods which should be applied for incorporating interest in national accounts. In the first part an investigation is made into the opinions of the most important authors from the end of the 18th till the beginning of the 20th century concerning the role of interest in national income calculation. The second part deals with the different theories about the calculation of the contribution of government to national product and the problem whether interest on government debt should be included in national income. We then study the different methods for calculating the contribution of financial intermediaries to national product and the consequences of the different methods as to the incorporation of interest in private and public consumption data. In the conclusion are given some indications on their relative value as measures of wealth of national product and national income.
