De bedrijfsstructuur in de financiële sector

Abstract

The structure of enterprises in the financial sector - In this note some statistical evidence is given on the evolution of the number and the dimension of enterprises and their settlements in the financial sector in Belgium during the period of 1910 to 1961. The first part describes the difficulties encountered in this study since the statistical series are hard to compare. Suggested is to create a mixed group of statisticians to examine this problem. Further scientific analysis could only be possible on basis of a financial survey where statistics of different sources are made comparable. The main conclusion of the second part of the study is that the expansion of the number of settlements of financial institutions during the last fifty years is important but inversely that their dimension is declining very fast. This phenomenon is essentially due to the decentralisation policy of these institutions. Although the growing dimension of the institutions, the result of their localisation policy is that the dimension of the settlements was in 1961 the same as in 1910. The question is asked if this policy can be defended from an economic point of view and if the solution is not further concentration on the top so that economics of scale could be made profitable in the financial sector.
