Een methodologische bijdrage tot de studie van de verstedelijking: toepassing van de Guttman-schaal
Abstract
A methodological contribution to the study of urbanisation: application of the Guttman scale - In order to study the different patterns of urbanization in a Belgian coastal area, two community-typologies have been confronted, the first being based on socio-economic and the second on demografic data. One of the major difficulties encountered dealt with the devising of a method to classify the communities in a certain number of groups. This, to be done in such a way that a maximum of homogeneity within each group is elaborated and the rural-urban continuum fully respected. The Guttman scale analysis previously has been used in a similar way by J. Smith, who’s aim was to divide a town into „census tracts” on the basis of demographically homogeneous populations. In the application of the Guttman scale, presented in this article, following items have been used: - legitimate fertility rate - mean annual rate of increase (expon. pop.) - net migration rate – sexratio. A clear picture of the process of urbanization in the survey area could be outlined by the resulting scale-types. Some practical questions and further possibilities of the method are finally discussed.
