Gezindsbudget en levenswijze van op rust gestelde arbeiders en bedienden: een onderzoek te Gent

Abstract

Family budget and ways of life of retired manual workers and clerks. A survey in Ghent - The purpose of this study is to collect precise data about the conditions and ways of life of married retired manual workers and clerks. Therefor a survey, consisting essentially in a budget-analysis, has been undertaken in Ghent. The authors accentuate that their publication has only the value of a pilot-study, because, for the budget-analysis, only one month has been taken into consideration and, ultimately, only 79 cases (44 retired manual workers and 35 retired clerks) have been studied. The authors start with a detailed study of the data from the budget analysis. They also study how far the amount of the pension covers the spendings and what kind of restrictions the retired persons experience. Next, they throw light on the leisure activities of the interviewees and give attention to a number of opinions expressed by these retired people (among others the opinions of the aged about the obligatory age of retirement and the amount of the pension they receive). The authors conclude that the introduction of the pension system - which gives the retired people a right to an income where, before, they had to rely on a form of charity - has contributed to make the life of the aged more meaningful. Nevertheless the present-day situation does not yet guaran¬ tee these persons a care-free old age.
