Algemene ekonomische betekenis van de Belgische kortingzegel- en premiezegelpraktijk

Abstract

General economic significance of the Belgian trading stamp and discount stamp business - It is the purpose of the following article to present in a general framework the economic significance of two instruments of sales promotion: trading stamps and discount stamps. The impact on the Belgian retail trade is mainly illustrated by the results of a recent inquiry that was carried out by the Seminar for Applied Economics and the Centre for Productivity study and research. It is assumed that discount stamps and trading stamps are distributed with respectively n and 3 % of the national foodstuff consumption. The appreciation of their demand increasing effect shows that the trading stamps promote the purchases of premium-articles (secondary purchases). The competition stimulating effect of both techniques is however more difficult to evaluate. Because the article views these methods of sales promotion from a general economic angle, it is not possible to judge the repercussions and particular significance for the parties involved, although some of the problems are raised in the conclusion.
