Misdadigheid van de vrouw
Abstract
The criminality of women - A statistical analysis of the criminality of penal imputable women in Belgium, over the period 1900-1960, is made under the direction of Prof. Dr. M. Versichelen. The present article, constitutes an introduction to this study. It deals with the main problems of women’s criminality set forth in criminal literature. Attention has been paid to the smallness of women’s conviction rates and the various theories to explain this phenomenon. Of importance is the theory that women have a greater resistance, especially to inner stimuli, than men. Their criminality is thought to be principally caused by unfavourable surroundings. Not only sociological factors however, but also the passive and receptive nature of the female character and the typical female sexuality seem to play a role in the extend of women’s criminality. A few considerations are made concerning the type of women’s criminality. Women’s crime rates seem to be especially high with regard to petty and fraudulent criminality.
