De organisatie van de documentatie in het bedrijf
Abstract
The organisation of documentation in industry - This contribution outlines some leading principles in organising industrial documentation. It first reviews the basic attempts undertaken after World war I and II to co-ordinate efforts for a better international exchange of knowledge. Although this endeavour has not yet brought a satisfactory solution to the problem of making information sufficiently accessible, it remains worthwhile to recall such entreprises as these point to the barriers of any documentation work. What is to be meant precisely by documentation? Apart from the intake, registration and classification of documents, the main documentation task is seen in analysing the content of documents and directing the information revealed to the searcher who could use it. It goes without saying that industry too has to tackle the problem of its particular documentation. However, the question can be raised if the adopted systems meet the requirements? For all hinge upon the effectiveness of the classification schedules used and the qualifications of the man who run the system. In starting any documentation system it is recommended to take up an universally normalised classification scheme like f.i. the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). Both its coverage of all fields of human knowledge and its acceptance throughout the world not only guarantees an appropriate use for all subjects, but facilitates furthermore an interindustrial exchange of documentation. As regards the documentalist or information officer, he preferably combines an encyclopaedic-oriented interest with keenness of observation. Only a few topics can be highlighted here. They nevertheless make clear that the documentation problem as a whole urgently asks for a greater awareness of its complexity and an integral approach in order to face the overwhelming flood of existing information.
