Documentatie in de sociale wetenschappen: een schets van haar internationale structurele ontwikkeling
Abstract
Documentation in the social sciences, an outline of its international structural development - Some chapters in the history of the international organisation of bibliographical services have been reviewed. The organisation and planning was initiated at the Conference on the Improvement of Bibliographical Services in 1950. A planning based on the conclusion that any future action in bibliographical work should have its foundations in national activity and cooperation between nations, and should consist firstly in the creation of a comprehensive bibliographical substratum. From the viewpoint of the specialized documentation, in our case social science documentation, the need for abstracts and trend reports was stressed on several occasions. However, the International Committee for Social Sciences Documentation, the responsible international organisation in the field, being aware of those needs could only undertake, on a permanent basis, the international bibliographies in the social sciences. As a whole a much more allembracing cooperation is required to make these bibliographies more comprehensive in coverage. The thing most lacking is a universal classification scheme, the application of which could divide, once and for all, the bibliographical work. In the meantime the application of the standards on documentation and some annotation on the editorial and/or bibliographical background in the social science journal would render a valuable service to the typical social scientist in his searching of literature.
