Sociale klassen en klassenstrijd in het werk van R. Dahrendorf

Author

Abstract

Social classes and class struggle in the work of R. Dahrendorf - There are two fundamentally different approaches to the study of social structures, seen as exclusive alternative methods. It is the great pretense of R. Dahrendorf - “ Soziale Klassen und Klassenkonflikt in der industriellen Gesellschaft ” - to give a new view on these two mutually inimical approaches : the theory of integration (Integrationstheorie) and the theory of conflict (Herrschaftstheorie). Dahrendorf tries to give a synthesis of the two theories. He puts that “none of both theories is wrong in one sense or another; but each has its own range of phenomena.” His point of departure is that the “industrial society” is a class society with class conflicts (the theory of conflict) with this characteristic that the institutionalization of these conflicts (“controlled class struggle”) accomplishes a calm, gradual social development, without revolution (the theory of integration). The importance of the study of the author lies in the adoption of a social classes and class struggle model. But owing to the fact that he takes as moving force of social classes (the drive for) “authority”, he does not succeed in rehabilitating the class and class struggle approach. He turns out to be a theorist of the integrative school.
