Verantwoording en kritiek op de P'P"/D hypotese

Abstract

Justification and criticism of the P’P”/D hypothesis. - The Zipf formula is a hypothesis which has gained much importance during the last years. We shall test this hypothesis to see if it is possible to use it in every area. Zipf has particularly employed this formula for the interactions of two cities. The problem is the following: is this hypothesis valid in every area? The criticism we make is that this formula runs parallel with the formula of Newton and Coulomb in the science of physics. Zipf has forgotten that the two physic formulas have a constant factor (gravity-factor) which is directly in proportion to the field between the two centers. We correct the Zipf formula in this sense. The formula is too abstract to be acceptable. With this correction it is possible to accept the minimum equation in the whole of the human behavior theory of Zipf. Many other sociologists have thought along these lines. We think the Zipf formula is the result of all researches in this field.
