Internubium en intranubium: een konkreet onderzoek
Abstract
Internubium and intranubium. - This is a study of the extent of marriage between persons of a different and of a same social status, in a small Flemish community. The study covered 743 men aged 21 years and over. Occupations have been translated into social categories. A sixfold classification has been used. The occupation of the father of a woman being a more reliable criterion of social status than her own socio-occupational status, it is the social origin of the wife that has been taken into account for her classification. The relevant information available for each subject (whether or not the marriage was still in being at the time of interview) covered: the occupation of the subject; the occupation of the father; the occupation of the father-in-law. Two approaches of the problem have been used: first, the social status of the subject has been compared with that of the bride’s father; secondly, the social status of the subject’s father has been compared with that of the bride’s father. In both approaches, the figures reveal the presence of an association between the social status of the partners. Marriages between partners of a different social status show a tendency on the part of men to marry below their own status, which, of course means that the opposite holds for women. A break between manual and non-manual occupations was found.
